Out of TownIn this section I want to show you what the arabian desert is like outside Dubai. From any point in the city it is only a short drive and you will be right in the endless seas of sand. If you head eastwards you will soon reach the arid mountain range which stretches along the coast of the Indian Ocean. The east coast of the United Arab Emirates is just a one and a half hours drive away from Dubai and I regularly go scuba diving there or in the northern part the Arabian Peninsular called "Musandam". This mounainous region has almost no infrastructure and only few people live in this remote area. Also bordering Oman is the city of Al Ain, an oasis which has been used as a settlement for thousands of years. Today it is a relaxed, wide spread city with low rise buildings and literally millions of round abouts. I have been to Al Ain many times now and I still get completely lost there every time. Bad road signage, unreliable maps und the fact that every corner looks alike makes it a tough job to get to places. I can strongly recommend visiting Jebel Hafeet, a single mountain in the plain desert just outside Al Ain. The view from up there is very impressive. Another great place to visit is the Zoo, especially if you have to entertain a little toddler. Heading to the south from Dubai you will soon reach Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE and the largest of the seven Emirates. The city is quiet compared to Dubai and yet always worth a visit. Many cultural events take place in Abu Dhabi and only recently one attraction has been added to the calendar, the Formula One Grand Prix on Yas Island. Even further south towards Saud Arabia you will enter Rub Al Khali desert, the so called "Empty Quarter". Enormous dunes grow higher and higher the closer you get to Saudi Arabia. And all the sudden you are in a luscious green valley stretching from West to East for some one hundred kilometers. You have reached Liwa Oasis, a garden beset with high waves of orange sand. Just a fantastic place. |
