Leaving the "old" parts of Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road (SZR) towards Abu Dhabi you will soon reach a large city district which has been constructed over the past few years. Only a couple of years ago you would have felt like leaving Dubai after passing the industrial areas of Al Quoz and it would have been a surprising sight to see the Hard Rock Cafe standing literally in the middle of nowhere.

Well, those days of just a few years back are long gone... nowadays the Hard Rock Cafe is a dwarf surrounded by hundreds of towers and it will soon be demolished due to the high value of its property. On the side of SZR facing the shoreline several commercial free zone projects have been built, for example Media City, Internet City and Knowledge Village. On the other side of SZR you will pass the Emirates Hills Golf Course which is surrounded by several residential communities, such as "Jumeirah Islands", "The Meadows" and "The Springs". These are gated communities with stand-alone villas and lots of greenery.

However, these communities are barely visible if you are driving along SZR, as the road is bordered by skyscrapers. On the inland side it is the development of "Jumeirah Lakes Towers", consisting of around 80 skyscrapers. On the seaside it is the "Dubai Marina", which is a mostly residential project with some 200 high-rise buildings surrounding a man-made marina.

Not far from all this is "Palm Jumeirah", a man-made peninsular reaching seaward as far as five kilometres. Palm Jumeirah is officially completed and indeed, most of the construction work has been accomplished. It is a very strange feeling driving on Palm Jumeirah for the first time. It is so big, you do not even realize that it is not part of the mainland.

New Dubai has a lot to offer and it is just as impressive as any other part of Dubai. Its size really makes it a city within the city.
