About

Dubai Creek

The Dubai Creek is not a river as such, but an arm of the sea reaching quite a few kilometres inland. Where it used to end is a nature reserve which is home to thousands of flamingos. However, being Dubai, this is not the end of the Creek any longer. The Creek has been artificially extended to about twice its original length and this part of the Creek was named "Business Bay", stretching all the way around Downtown Dubai. Eventually Business Bay will be connected to the Sea making Downtown more or less an island.

The first historic settlements of Dubai stretched along the estuary of the Creek and over time they became the modern districts of Bur Dubai and Deira. Here life is still as it used to be decades ago with narrow streets in overcrowded Souks. The Creek is the center of this inspiring pandemonium and it is just as busy as the Souks are. Dozens of passenger ferries (the so-called Abras) are commuting without a fixed structure or timetable and in between the much larger Dhows try to make their way in and out of the Creek.

Visiting the Creek is a must! It just shows a completely different face of Dubai.
